Watts’ Bats Fall Silent in Loss to TNC

WASHINGTON -- The Alliance to Save Energy Killer Watts (presented by Sign of the WhaleTM) suffered a disheartening 12-2 loss at the hands of The Nature Conservancy (TNC) Naturals last Tuesday night, as defensive errors and a helpless offense doomed the hometown favorites. Posting season lows for runs (two) and hits (13), the Watts lost their season-long hold on sole possession of first place in the Heads Division of the Environmental Non-Profit League, falling into a tie with two weeks to go.

The Killer Watts fell behind quickly, allowing ten runs in the first two innings. Hoping to keep their deficit at just 4-1 with two outs and nobody on base in the bottom of the second, multiple errors and a questionable call at first unraveled the normally tight Watts defense. Six unearned runs crossed the plate, to which shortstop Sean “Pistol Pete” Garcia remarked after the game: “I need a bigger glove.”

Unable to sustain any sort of rally, the Watts hitters were only able to muster a single run in the sixth inning, ending the game with eight flyouts and 12 groundouts. While the Alliance did tighten up the leather at the end behind pitcher Holly Seeloff (5-2), mixing three scoreless defensive innings around a two-run TNC homer in the fifth, the early miscues left the game in little doubt.

The Watts were scheduled to play division co-leader the American Rivers Fighting Green Weasels for their next game.

NOTES: Regularly silent Watts veteran Steve Capanna has returned to Washington, DC after the Minnesota Supreme Court denied his petition to be named the junior senator from Minnesota during the state’s months-long disputed election on the grounds that he is neither a resident of Minnesota nor of the constitutionally mandated age of 30 to serve in the Senate. The Court instead named comedian Al Franken to the post. Capanna’s return to politics remains uncertain.
